Professor Darnell and Dr. Darnell will present how the public profile of archaeology in Egypt 1920s changed with the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Fascination with ancient Egypt was already in an upward swing, and they will discuss in particular the excavation of Amarna, the capital city of Akhenaten, Tutankhamun's father, and how fashion and advertising drew from these exciting developments even before 1922. Alongside the 1920s clothing from the Darnell Collection now currently on display as part of the new Weston HIstorical Society exhibit, their lecture will feature other spectacular examples of Egyptomania designs in clothing and jewelry.
This lecture is in connection with the history center’s 1920s exhibit, “Weston Slept While the Nation Roared: Life in the Twenties” which is open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 1pm – 4pm at 104 Weston Road in Weston, CT.
Dr. John Coleman Darnell is Professor of Egyptology in the Department of Near Eastern Languages at Yale University, Curator at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, and Director of the archaeological expedition, the Elkab Desert Survey Project. He has published over a dozen books, many of which have focused on his work in the Eastern and Western Deserts, the caravan roads that criss-cross the eastern Sahara, the rock art and inscriptions that ancient Egyptians carved along the roads. In 2017, his expedition found the earliest monumental hieroglyphic inscription, dating to 3250 BCE.
Dr. Colleen Darnell teaches art history at Naugatuck Valley Community College and other universities in Connecticut. Her research has focused on historical fiction in ancient Egypt, Egyptomania in art and literature, and ancient military history. John and Colleen’s most recent book is the Ancient Egyptian Netherworld Books (SBL Press, 2018), the first single-volume English translation of the hieroglyphic texts in the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
